UN mourns the death of Sultan Qaboos
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al-Said 18/11/1940 – 10/01/2020
Yesterday, the General Assembly of the United Nations observed a minute of silence, standing in mourning for the death of His Majesty, the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour Al-Said, according to the Ministry of Education.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) extended its deepest condolences to the Al-Said Royal Family of the Sultanate of Oman, its Government and its citizens and descendants.
UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay said:
“I felt deeply saddened by the death of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour Al-Said and will perpetuate his memory, thanks to his wisdom and peaceful perspective and thanks to his work on developing his country and his quest to make the world more sustainable. He will leave a legacy for current and future generations, exemplified by his commitment to preserving biodiversity and preserving the environment, which he embodied in the UNESCO-Sultan Qaboos Prize, which was established nearly thirty years ago.”
The Ministry of Education said in a statement:
“Oman joined UNESCO in 1972, and Sultan Qaboos during his fifty years of rule was committed to spreading the message of peace and dialogue, putting his country on the path of development. UNESCO and Sultan Qaboos established the UNESCO-Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Protection in 1989, in order to support international efforts in the field of environmental conservation, which is a recognition of the value of time and effort to make the world more sustainable, granted once every two years since 1991.”
